Reporting erosion and sediment control problems in the I-66 Outside the Beltway construction zone. Observed - May 10, 2020, about 11:00 AM Location - Interchange of I-66 and Rt. 123, just east of 123 and just south of 66, coordinates 38.867986 , -77.308395 This is one example along this project of many large soil piles left without stabilization for extended periods, in this case, since at least April 15th. This particular pile has the added negative feature of being perched atop a steep slope with no sediment control at all evident on the downhill side. Erosion rills have been visible for this entire period. Extensive mudflows from the pile are evident, burying construction materials and flooding work areas. What could not be observed is by what route the runoff will continue to the Mosby Woods tributary of Accotink Creek during rain events or what measures might exist to intercept this sediment flow before reaching the stream. The sole precipitation in the last 72 hours was 0.1 inch about 36 hours prior to the observation.
